Noah's ark

Movie Noah inconsistent with the Bible

The 2014 film Noah is a highly controversial film, and that is not what its title should be, as it has little to do with real events. At the beginning, words from Scripture are quoted, so the viewer may get the impression that the film is trying to accurately portray the events described in the pages of the Bible, which is not the case. If there had been an insert at the beginning informing the viewer that "this thing" does not reflect real events, and that many plots and characters were introduced by the director, the film would not have been so inferior. On one site you can read that director/screenwriter Darren Aronofsky claims that no one in cinema has yet adhered as closely to the letter of the Bible as he has, which is, of course, complete nonsense.

The film Noah is a fantasy, and one who has not read the Scriptures may thereby misperceive God, who is love, and doubt the existence of the ark and the Flood. On the special effects and action side, there can be no complaints. The creatures from the rocks look interesting, although they are heavily scooped and do not appear in the Bible. The film ridicules the Bible, faith in God, and shows a Creator devoid of love and justice. Atheists and people without a deeper faith should never make films related to the Scriptures, because they do a lot of harm in this way.

Those who haven't watched the film and don't want to know some of the plot details may not want to read the rest of the article, which lists the main inconsistencies with Scripture.

Differences from scripture and film

The quotes are from the First Book of Moses chapters 6 through 9.

1.
Movie - Disobedient angels so-called giants in the form of living clumsy rocks that helped people.
Bible - There is no mention of anyone helping Noah's family to build the ark. Fallen angels do not help people. Any help they can offer us is illusory and consequently leads to evil, e.g. a demon will help you gain wealth in order to distance you from God through it. The Bible does not confirm the existence of walking, talking rocks.

About the giants the verse says: "There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."

There are two basic interpretations.

The first assumes that the sons of God are the godly sons of Seth, and the daughters of men are the godless offspring of Cain. This argument is based on chapter 4, where the offspring of Cain is presented, and on chapter 5, where the offspring of Seth, from whom Noah descended, is presented. The beginning of chapter 6 combines these two lines into one. The remainder of chapter 6 speaks of sinless humans, not angels.

The second interpretation assumes that the sons of God were fallen angels. The problem is that angels do not reproduce and do not marry, although this applies to angels who remain in heaven, perhaps fallen angels due to sin have a sex drive, which does not change the fact that the rock giants in the film, could not have been fallen angels, but only children of demons and humans. Following this line of thought, it is not possible that they were later taken to heaven on a forgiven basis, because they were never in it. In the case that the talking rocks were fallen angels as sons of God, there is a contradiction, in the film these walking rocks are portrayed as positive characters, while the giants were, after all, negative.

2.
Movie - Matuzalem possesses a fiery sword that consumes the entire human army with fire, helping the giants.
Bible - Matuzalem begat Lamech, and the latter begat Noah. Scripture mentions nothing about helping the giants and the battles that took place there and the lightsaber.

3.
Movie - only 2 women entered the ark, Noah's wife and Ila.
Bible - 4 women entered the ark, Noah's wife and the wives of his sons.

But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

4.
Movie - the land was mostly barren, devoid of vegetation, except for the forest that grew from seeds.
Bible - the earth was full of vegetation, man was not able to destroy the natural world as quickly as it is depicted in the film. The climate that prevailed in those days was conducive to the growth of plants, it is assumed that the earth was surrounded by a mantle of water, which protected it from harmful radiation and drying out. The oil and coal that we extract now must have been created, with a huge amount of vegetation.

5.
Movie - Ila met her great-grandfather in the forest, and he blessed her.
Bible - There is no verse about such an event.

6.
Movie - Cham went looking for his wife in the camp of robbers.
Bible - Cham had a wife, he didn't need to look for her in the camp of the wicked and thus there was no scene in which the girl he was running away with fell into a snare.

7.
Movie - The ark was attacked by humans and living rocks, and Noah struggled to keep it. Tubal-Cain broke into the ark.
Bible - God waited for people, except for the animals and Noah's family, no one went inside. God closed the door, not Noah, and closed it 7 days before the flood.

And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation. For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth. And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

8.
Movie - first the birds flew in, then the amphibians, and finally the other animals in such numbers that the ark would not hold them all.
Bible - it is not shown in what order the animals entered and it was only a few of each kind.

Noah did not need to take large animals and so many snakes into the ark. There was no need for that. He could have taken the small animals themselves, which no longer required adult care, and taken only a few from each genus, not species. Example: the zebra, horse and donkey share a common ancestor that is similar to them. Crossing a zebra with a donkey will result in a new species, but not a genus. If Noah took to the ark, the young animals should have no problem reproducing, even if they were of a different species.

Look at dogs, even though they are the same species they have a huge number of breeds. In the same way, from two animals of different species, many animals of other species, but of the same type, could have been created. There are about 8,000 basic types of animals in the world. Some researchers even claim that for the formation of currently living types of species it would have been enough to put only 43 types of mammals, 74 types of birds and 10 types of reptiles in the ark, that is, 72 types of quadrupeds and about 200 birds. Even if we don't agree with this calculation, it doesn't change the fact that Noah could fit all the animals he was supposed to put in the ark.

And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

9.
Movie - Noah wanted to kill Ily's children.
Bible - He couldn't do it, there were 4 women in the ark, each of them fertile.

But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.

10.
Movie - Noah's children were young.
Bible - Noah's children were at least 100 years old.

And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

11.
Movie - lying creation of the world, in which the sun, moon and stars are shown created on the second day, and animals are created, as it were, through evolution
Bible - the Bible says explicitly that the sun, moon and stars were created on the fourth day, after the earth emerged and vegetation was created on the third day. There is no question of evolution here.

There are more differences, these are the main ones.

Positives of the film:

At first, the planet was very interestingly depicted as a large continent, but we can read more from the biblical description that there were no oceans at that time, as they were under the surface of the earth, as if waiting for the flood.

The animal that people hunted in the opening scenes of the film was also an interesting surprise. There we saw an animal that is currently dead, but which may have once existed.

The figure of Adam and Eve without clothes, but shining so strongly with God's love that they could not feel shame.

The words "forgive me Creator" and the ascension of the disobedient angels under the form of rocks, was the most touching moment, although it is a typically plot-driven scene and inconsistent with Scripture, the viewer could feel the joy as God takes his children to heaven.

Is this movie that bad?

Yes, it messes with people's heads, makes Noah into a psychopath wanting to kill his family, and tragically misinterprets God's decisions. On the typically biblical side, the film definitely loses and creates confusion for people who have not read the Bible. Dislikes include the hubris and lies of the director, who claims that no one in cinema has yet stuck to the letter of the Bible as strongly as he has, and the absence of live rock angels in the film's spots and preview shots. Presumably, the filmmakers feared that when people familiar with the Scriptures saw such a fantasy, they would not go to theaters.

One gets the impression that director Darren Aronofsky decided that because the Bible doesn't write about something, it doesn't mean it didn't happen. It's true that not everything is described, but that doesn't allow you to arbitrarily shape a story that doesn't stand in line with the teachings of the Bible, it's like saying that Noah on the second day after leaving the ark killed all the animals, and God, having no choice, created them anew.
