Biblical Creation of the World
day four

Genesis 1.14-19

King James Version "And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good."

New International Version "And God said, Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth. And it was so. God made two great lights-the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning-the fourth day."

On the fourth day, God created the Sun, Moon and stars. Did the Sun exist before, since days and mornings were appointed? The Scriptures indicate that it did not. In Israel's neighboring countries, the Sun and Moon were called by the names of gods believed in, just as the Roman Empire later practiced sun worship. According to the Bible, the Sun and Moon were created on a single day, and here there is little dispute.

We wrote about the light that separated day from night in earlier times in the article:

The formation of stars comes down to two interpretations

The first assumes that all the stars that God created on that day were the first stars, which means that on the third day there was not a single star in the universe. The question then arises, after the angels, were we the first beings in the cosmos? More stars and inhabited planets could have been created in the following days/years or planet Earth is the only inhabited planet in the universe.

The second interpretation assumes that there may have been other stars before Earth, and God on that day created additional ones that may have been placed closer to Earth. In this case, humans right after angels need not be the first beings in the cosmos, because life may have already existed on earlier planets, although it is possible that we are the only ones anyway. The Bible does not explicitly say whether there are other inhabited systems in the universe.

The view that we are not alone in the universe derives from the interpretation in Job 1.6 "Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them." where representatives of other planets are considered sons of God. However, the biblical text is not clear enough in this case to be sure that the interpretation is correct.

Regardless of which interpretation is correct, I suggest everyone go outside the city at night and admire the magnificent cloudless sky. The sky seen at night outside the city lights is a magnificent and wonderful sight. It is a good idea to buy a telescope and admire the magnificent universe created by the Lord. In winter, the constellations Orion and the Pleiades mentioned in the Scriptures can be seen very well.

The creation of the Sun, Moon and stars after the earth (day one) and vegetation (day three) have already been created is strongly opposed to the theory of evolution and the big bang. If you believe in evolution it is tantamount to not believing in the words of the Bible. There is no room for ape-man hybrids, etc.

  • Job 9.9 "Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south."
  • Job 38.31 "Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?"
  • Amos 5.8 "Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name."
